Liverpool took a huge step towards winning the Premier League title with an impressive 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The Reds scored early and remained strong throughout the game, securing three valuable points in their title race.
Fast Start for Liverpool
The match started cautiously, with both teams trying to control possession. Liverpool, however, struck first from a well-executed corner. Alexis Mac Allister delivered a low pass to Dominik Szoboszlai, who smartly flicked it behind him to Mohamed Salah. Salah’s shot took a deflection off a City defender and flew past Ederson, giving Liverpool the lead.
City tried to respond quickly, with Phil Foden and Omar Marmoush testing Alisson, but their attempts were comfortably dealt with. Marmoush even managed to find the net, but the goal was ruled offside. Liverpool stayed composed and continued to look dangerous on the counter-attack.
Szoboszlai Doubles the Lead
Just before halftime, Liverpool struck again. Salah picked up a long ball on the right flank and made a surging run into the box. Spotting an unmarked Szoboszlai, he squared the ball for the Hungarian midfielder, who smashed it into the net to put Liverpool 2-0 up.
City struggled to create clear-cut chances, and despite their possession dominance, they couldn’t find a way past Liverpool’s rock-solid defense. The Reds expertly absorbed pressure and threatened on the break.

Second-Half Control and a Disallowed Goal
Manchester City started the second half with urgency, pushing for a way back into the game. They dominated possession but lacked sharpness in the final third. Liverpool’s defense remained disciplined, closing down spaces and frustrating City’s attackers.
Liverpool even thought they had a third goal when Curtis Jones found the net, but VAR intervened, ruling that Szoboszlai was offside in the build-up. Despite this setback, Liverpool remained in control and saw out the game professionally.
Salah’s Outstanding Record
Mohamed Salah continues to break records for Liverpool. With this game, he has now scored 30 goals in a season for the fifth time since joining the club in 2017. He also provided his 16th Premier League assist of the season, just four short of the record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Salah has now scored 241 goals for Liverpool, making him the club’s joint third-highest goalscorer of all time. He is only behind Roger Hunt (285) and Ian Rush (346). If he continues at this pace, he could surpass Hunt’s tally by next season.
City’s Young Squad Struggles
Pep Guardiola fielded one of his youngest-ever starting XIs in the Premier League, with an average age of just 25 years and 68 days. While City’s young stars showed moments of promise, they lacked the experience and composure needed to break down Liverpool’s well-organized defense.
Jeremy Doku was a bright spark for City, repeatedly getting past Trent Alexander-Arnold but failing to deliver the right final pass. Savinho and young defender Abdukodir Khusanov also showed potential but struggled under pressure.
Meanwhile, Kevin De Bruyne, one of City’s most experienced players, appeared to be reaching the twilight of his career. Left out of the starting lineup against Real Madrid in midweek, he was also substituted early in this game. His influence on the team is fading, and City may need to find a new leader in midfield.
