There was lots to debate from Nigeria’s entertaining 3-3 draw with Russia, however Osayande Peter Edokpolor’s introduction was actually one of many positives to take from the pleasant.
The 19-year-old Benfica U20 ahead made his senior worldwide debut after approaching within the seventieth minute and wanted solely eight minutes to announce himself on the worldwide stage.
Edokpolor discovered the online within the 78th minute, giving the Tremendous Eagles renewed hope as they tried to overturn a two-goal deficit. Nigeria ultimately accomplished the comeback by way of Akor Adams’ stoppage-time equaliser.
For us at Softfootball, one of the encouraging points of Edokpolor’s cameo was his willingness to take duty in entrance of aim.
The teen didn’t spend an excessive amount of time in search of the proper alternative. When house opened up, he backed himself and pulled the set off. The trouble might have taken a deflection on its manner into the online, however the resolution to shoot within the first place was what stood out.
That’s one thing Nigeria can actually profit from.
At occasions, the Tremendous Eagles have gamers who seem reluctant to shoot till they’ve moved extraordinarily near the goalkeeper. There are additionally events when promising attacking positions finish with out an try on aim. Edokpolor confirmed a distinct intuition: see the opening, take the possibility and make one thing occur.
In fact, one look and one aim will not be sufficient to make main conclusions a couple of younger participant. There’s nonetheless lots for the Benfica teen to be taught, significantly as he continues adjusting to the calls for and depth of senior worldwide soccer.
However his debut supplied an encouraging glimpse of what he might doubtlessly supply.
His direct strategy, confidence to shoot and pure attacking instincts are qualities value monitoring as his growth continues.
At 19, Edokpolor nonetheless has time on his facet. If he stays dedicated to enhancing, maintains consistency and manages to remain clear of great accidents, there is no such thing as a cause why he can not develop right into a helpful possibility for Nigeria at senior stage.
For now, his subsequent precedence needs to be persevering with his progress with Benfica and the Nigeria U23 setup. The Tremendous Eagles debut and aim in opposition to Russia are a very good begin, however the actual problem is popping that promising cameo into sustained growth.
